I (Rachel) got home a couple of hours ago after a long, 12 hour ride from South Florida visiting my family. My mom had noticed a neighbor of hers was selling some furniture, one piece just happened to be double bed bunk beds. They just happened to be silver and girly. And perfect for sleeping 3 girls who will be sharing a room.
She snatched it up for us, and since the yard sale fun was finished, I had a breather and took Mary and Isaac down for a little visit to “Grandma and Grandpa’s” and to pick up the bunk bed. In Scott’s truck. By myself.
People already think we are nuts for many reasons, so this probably just confirmed it for many. That I would drive 12 hours with a baby and a 5 year old in a truck. By myself.
But you know what? The kids did great, and it was really a sweet time in the truck listening to music, watching movies (the kids, not me. I’m not that nuts!) etc. (I did look like Sanford and Sons with the back of Scott’s truck all tarped down and overloaded.) But it turned out to be such a sweet visit with my folks, my sisters, and my nieces.
I thought a lot about the extended family that Viktor and Tanya will be gaining as they join our family. We are a little nuts, but we also love each other a whole lot. We have history.
I want them to have history. The good kind. The kind that makes them feel that they belong.
I want them to be part of our inside jokes, part of our traditions, part of our family. I know it will take time. But I really, really want that for them.
There’s no place like home. It’s good to be home.
