I love the way God speaks to His children today. Sometimes, it is a still, small voice that whispers in your ear, but only if you are listening. Other times, it is a brother or sister in Christ, who intercedes for you and speaks to you what God has laid on their heart. Still other times, it is through His living and active Word that pierces your soul as you read it, the words dancing off the page and screaming for your attention.
And sometimes, He uses all of these ways to show you what He wants you to do. For us, that is precisely what He has done.
Tanya has an older brother, who recently turned 17, and his name is Viktor. In a few months he will graduate from the orphanage, and try to make some kind of life for himself. On his own. Without anyone to cheer him on or guide or help him. Without any real target to shoot for, since he hasn’t seen what a successful family looks like.
Honestly, I felt bad for him when I first heard about him. But I never asked the Lord what I should do. I just felt it wasn’t my problem. I mean, I already have four kids, and I’m already adopting another one.
I gave the Lord all the reasons why it wouldn’t be a good idea. Some of them were like, “How am I going to feed him? How am I going to clothe another person? How in the world am I going to provide for him, too? I mean the economy is terrible. And how in the world would he be able to get a job here? Plus I don’t have room for him, Lord!”
And then my Bible opened to Matthew 6. And the Lord began to show me where my treasure is. And he told me not to be anxious about the very things I had just told him I should be anxious about. Like what to eat. And what to wear. And what the future will hold.
And a close friend of mine was praying for us and the Lord showed her a picture. Double bunk beds in the girls room, with our three girls tucked in safe and sound in their beds. Viktor, in what used to be the guest room, having some space to himself. And Scott being a father to him, discipling him and teaching him how to be a godly man.
Scott and I dropped to our knees, and surrendered. And the peace of Christ flooded our hearts; we knew what He was asking us to do. We again bathed the thing in prayer for a week, and each day the Lord gave us more peace in our hearts and more love for Viktor. We know He is calling us to adopt both Tanya and Viktor into our family.
Honestly, we have never been more sure of something that we need to do. And we have never been more scared to do it. We are struggling with fear, worry, insecurities, among others, and at the same time are hopeful as we want desperately to walk out our obedience to God.
Would you continue praying for us? We cannot express our thanks enough. Pray for Viktor and Tanya, as well as our other four children. We desperately need it!
